The Tonle Sap floating villages have become of great interest to tourists visiting Siem Reap - they have become a 'must see' destination. The fascination with people who live in floating houses, travel to and daily school life in floating schools, eat at floating restaurants and how they love their daily life compared to those on the land is quite an attraction.
Along with the floating villages, there are also stilted villages spread along the banks of Tonle Sap Lake, where houses and buildings rest on tall, thin stilts that keep the occupants dry during the wet season, with giant ladders to reach the lower levels during the dry season.
Floating Villages
Several communities of people are living on the Tonle Sap Lake. There are four main villages that are accessible from Siem Reap and a variety of ways to get there. The villages are: Chong Kneas, Mechrey, Kampong Phluk and Kampong Khleang.
Drive alongside the long and majestic river then have your own private boat tour along Kompong Phuluk / Khleang and see the locals fishing, shopping, at school and working at restaruants, all which are on stilts in the water (some of the restaurants even have large aligators that you can safely view and photograph). Taste the fresh seafood caught locally whilst dinning or have a cool refreshment at a local floating reastaurant. There are many great photo opporunities to experience during this tour (*Sunset Tour not included - but can be added to your tour package).
